YOGA FOR ANXIETY & DEPRESSION

 Yoga for Anxiety and Depression

HOW CAN A REGULAR YOGA PRACTICE HELP?

Anxiety and depression are the most common mental health issues affecting millions of people in our society. Many of us may struggle with these issues at some point in our lives.

YOGA REDUCES ANXIETY & DEPRESSION AND PANIC

My specialist yoga therapy classes are calm and restorative, relaxing your body and mind. When practiced regularly, yoga can reduce your sympathetic nervous system’s fight-or-flight response, which can cause inflammation of all kinds and wreak havoc on your mind and body. Yoga practice involves focusing on the breath and slow movements, which can help trigger your parasympathetic nervous system, reducing the by-products of stress and feelings of anxiety.

BREATH WORK

In yoga, breath awareness is key, I teach breath awareness throughout every practice, and provide participants with valuable tools and techniques to adopt throughout their daily lives. Such techniques are invaluable to those suffering from panic attacks and stress. This is one of the reasons I fell in love with yoga, the tools I have learnt and

have adapted are the tools that I used to heal myself.

Try this simple exercise below:

BREATHE ALONG TO THIS..... NICE AND SLOW.

Begin by breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth.... and then gradually breathing in the nose and out through the nose

BREATH COMES IN, BREATH GOES OUT.

MINDFULNESS

Through a mindfulness yoga practice, participants become anchored

into the present, pulling all focus onto their body. Anxiety is defined as

"a persistent, excessive and unrealistic worry about the future." The

ability to draw the mind back to the present is therefore an incredibly useful way to steer away from those toxic thoughts about the future.

As you practice yoga and become mindful of not just your body, but also of your thoughts and emotions, you will become more connected to and mindful of your environment, your community, and the world around you.

REGAIN CONTROL OF BODY AND MIND

Anxiety often feels like a lack of control. Yoga will ultimately put the participant back into a state where they are able to take that control back, an understanding that they are in charge and not the anxiety.

SELF CONFIDENCE

Through regular practice, yoga will help the participant to build their confidence, achieve new possibilities and learn to love themselves, exactly as they are. Yoga forces us to look at every single part of our body, from the top of our heads right down to the tips of our toes. It is one of the most crucial elements of the practice. This technique helps you to break down your physical self when anxiety strikes. You can engage in introspection in a calm and collected way.

RELEASES TENSION

Anxiety can cause your body to tense up, particularly in the neck, shoulders and back. Yoga helps the participant to release that tension, allowing the body to become free and more open.

BRINGS PEACE AND CALM

Let's not forget that undeniable sense of serenity yoga provides you with. The mixture of the deep movements, calm setting, gentle instructions and beautiful music work together to build the ultimate tranquillity. And when anxiety attacks, tranquillity is exactly what you need.
